You may know Gaten Matarazzo as the actor who plays Dustin in the Netflix Series, “Stranger Things”. In the show, Matarazzo’s character Dustin is nicknamed “toothless” because his teeth are not developed. Dustin has a rare genetic disorder called Cleidocranial Dysplasia (CCD) that affects the development of teeth and the development of collar bones. Though the actor’s character has this disorder, few people know that Matarazzo actually has CCD in real life and the writers of “Stranger Things” decided to write his disorder into the show. The 14 year old appeared on the “Jonathan Ross Show” and explained how he wanted to spread awareness of CCD. CCD can affect bone development, but what does that mean for your teeth?
First, let’s talk about what Cleidocranial Dysplasia is. CCD is a genetic condition where the gene that helps to regulate the development of bone and cartilage (RUNX2) mutates. In rare cases, the CCD gene is passed onto offspring. It is a very rare disorder that occurs within one in one million people, but symptoms vary from person to person. Matarazzo has a mild case of it. Here are the signs and symptoms
The spaces between the bones of the skull take longer to close or do not close at all.
Narrow chest and sloping shoulders due to partly or completely missing collarbones.
Osteoporosis
Narrow or abnormal shaped pelvis
Short stature
In regards to dental problems, people with CCD lose their baby teeth and develop their adult teeth late. This causes an overcrowding of teeth and a misaligned jaw. Thankfully, early checkups to a dental clinic familiar with CCD allows for the necessary steps to improve the appearance of teeth and enhance the ability to chew. Procedures may include surgery.
As a number of fans learned about Matarazzo’s condition, he was overwhelmed by the kind messages he received from people like him or people who have family/friends like him. Matarazzo has even opened up by sharing photos of his fake teeth on Instagram.
