How Dentists Replace Missing Teeth | Dental Bridge

One way dentists replace missing teeth is by creating a bridge. A bridge is made up of 2 more crowns on both sides of the missing tooth and the false tooth/teeth in between. These crowns anchor the bridge so that it is securely in place (see diagram below). These false teeth are called pontics and can be made from alloys, porcelain, gold, or a combination of these materials.

With good oral hygiene and regular checkups, dental bridges can last up to 15 years or longer. But sometimes dentists have to replace a bridge sooner. The photo below shows a case with a bridge of over 14 years. Due to the patient needing a root canal on an abutment tooth, the bridge had to be replaced.

Process of Getting a Bridge

The process of getting a bridge may take multiple visits depending on each case. On your first visit, teeth are prepared by recontouring and removing a portion of enamel so that there is room for a crown to be placed over them. Impressions are taken so that your dentist will have a model for the shape of the bridge that is needed. The impressions are sent to the lab and the customized crown and bridge are made. In the meantime, your dentist will make a temporary bridge for you to wear so that your exposed teeth and gums will be protected.

The next visit, the temporary bridge is removed and the new bridge will be adjusted and placed, so that it fits your mouth properly. Below is the photo of the bridge replacement of over 14 years. This patient may also need lumineers so that the color of her existing teeth matches with the bridge.

There are many benefits of a dental bridge that include, restoring your smile, maintaining the shape of your face, restoring your ability to chew and speak properly, and preventing teeth from moving out of position. It is also important to care for them so that they last. Maintain your oral health by brushing twice a day, flossing, using mouthwash, and also eating healthy.
